MSN Music, URGE, and now Rhapsody. I thought Rhapsody was owned by Real Networks. I have always been under the impression that Microsoft and Real Networks were not on friendly terms.

Including Rhapsody was part of a lawsuit settlement with Real Networks from several years back.

The Rhapsody streaming music client was written by another company using Windows Media components and was later bought by Real Networks. Rhapsody also uses MS's DRM system for its "Plays For Sure" support of portable players.

Alejo,
I have Vista installed on two machines, one is a desktop PC, and the other is a Home Entertainment PC. I do not have 5.1 sound on the desktop PC, but I do have 5.1 sound on the other machine, and it is working fine. The home theater PC has more Processing Power than the other so it does fine, but the desktop PC has had more of a problem.

We were promised a full RAW support built in Vista. Is this feature another one that got scrapped? Shame on MS, if it's the case!

it sounds like there is a combination of driver and Media Player 11 problem. i have read some people having the same problem as i but when they install I-tunes the sound works fine. i will try and see.

I agree entirely. However, according to the Logitech sources (and other vendors too) Microsoft did not made available in advance coding for Vista RC1. Hence the dely with the drivers. Similar situation is with the HP scanners. Taking into consideration that Beta Testers have an enthusiastic approach to the testing venture - we may understand some delay supplying of drivers for RC1 - but total of them is gently speaking unforgivable.

Since Microsoft is now at Release Candidate 1 stage of developement I'm a little surprized Logitech isn't asking Vista evaluators to test drivers with Logitech hardware. As it is now the Logitech hardware I have either lacks driver or software support and in some cases even both. Such as the Logitech Quickcam Orbit a device I paid $140.00 which is now a paperweight.
They must be sending mixed signals. I have an All-in-Wonder x800xt and when I emailed them about full support, they said they will release drivers for TV, etc, once Vista was released....At least, for the newer versions of the AIW series.

The ATI WebSite still lists 4 AIW card models as still current products so all of the product line was not discontinued in late August or in September as rumored it would be. So I assume these are the ones that they will provide drivers for:

Did the response you got say Vista Media Center compatible drivers or did they just say Vista drivers for their MMC application.

Hi, Thanks for you reply. I have tried to install my QuickCam Orbit manually exactly in the same way as you described it, but with no success.
My camera is a bit older than yours, and this might be the reason that Vista RC1 (build 5728) is not accepting the drivers at all.

It's not enough to run as Administrator - you either have to turn off UAC completely or edit the ACLs on your folders directly.

You may still need to adjust the individual folder/file permissions.
Otherwise you're really just looking at standard beta program pain.

If you are running an operating system beta, then I think you probably have the skills to look that up yourself. If not, then this isn't the place to give a tutorial in Windows security features.

I checked my iTunes folder and I made it able to write to the folder. It still doesn't work.
My computer is running iTunes 7 on Windows Vista Ultimate edition RC1. Please help.
I don't see how you can display only items with a given rating in a folder, but you can click on a tag or a folder in the left pane and then choose the thumbnail setting that will sort or group the selection by rating.
Will that work?
"Gunder" wrote:
I Run Vista RC1. How do I show pictures with a given rating (for example 2 stars) in a given folder or selection?
The point with this is to reduce the number of pictures so one for instance can find the best pictures in a shoot. Adobe Bridge has this functionality. With Windows Photo Gallery I can find ALL pictures with a given rating, but I have not found a way to do it in only a given folder
OK mike, we all know you're the beta god, but why don't you answer his question or quit posting altogether "Mike Williams" wrote in message
If you are running an operating system beta, then I think you probably have the skills to look that up yourself. If not, then this isn't the place to give a tutorial in Windows security features.
...and no, I don't think it should be this hard.

I believe this is typical Apple iPhoto stuff and one of the reasons why I ended up hating iPhoto when I was trying and failing to switch to Mac last summer. In apple you can avoid it and I don't think it renames your originals (so Vista is worse), but it's the same kind of thing where a layer of unnecessary bureaucracy is installed between the user and the user's content.
"Mitch W" wrote in message
I was really impressed with the way Vista is handling photographs and the tight integration with Photo Gallery. I thought I could do away with programs like Picasa, but I found a big problem.
I put some images onto a test machine, made some fixes to them, reverted to original, etc. I then checked the original directory and my original files were not there - the modified versions were then in their place. I then went searching the hard drive for the original image and I found it in the following folder:
C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\Original Images
I checked the filenames and although my original file was called IMG_2635.JPG the file in the "original images" folder is called
{530FB1E9-0950-40F3-A4C5-715148FCEE37}-IMG_2635.JPG
I see two problems with this approach:
1. Let's say I regularly back up my Pictures folder, but not this hidden obscure folder, then my system crashes or hardware fails and I reload the OS and restore files from my backup source. I have restored a modified version, not the original. Very bad design.
2. This potentially wastes a large amount of disk space.
Other applications either use sidecar files, XMP files, XML files to describe the change and then apply those files over the original. I wish Microsoft would do the same. If I missed something in the way my version of Photo Gallery is configured, please let me know.
thanks, mitch

I am also having an issue with divx and xvid. I have instaled both and when I try to play .avi files it full on crashes WMP. When I try to play dvx encoded .wmv files I get sound, but the video is all noise. when I try to play the sae file in Real I get the vid, but not the audio.
The frst question I have is that when I got to the plugins list under Tools/options I cannot find divx or xvid listed and Ithought in previous versions that it was. Can ayone verify this? I thought maybe Idid something wrong with both installs so I oled the link to wmplugins.com and redownloaded and reinstalled both divx and xvid. Still having issues.
anyone else noticed the disconnect with installed pluggins with WMP11.0.5744.6324?
mp3 is not 5.1. XP delivers sound to all speakers regardless of the audio format. Vista will dleiver 5.1 when a 5.1 audio source (DVD with 5.1) is played. If your config works then it will work with MCE or WMP 11. Most DVD's have 2 or 3 audio sources. LCPM, DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. You can't get 5.1 with LCPM. Vista is a more precise OS than XP.

Vista may have the latest available driver. The rest is up to the hardware manufacturer. Some release beta drivers (eg NVidia, Realtek) and many others don't. "Pete" wrote in message

Hey Doug, had that same problem in xp when I first installed IE7 but that finally resolved w/either ie or mm updates and recently in vista with MusicMatch 10. Ironically, when I went to duplicate the workaround, I found all is working in vista/mmjb10(10.00.4033) but vista/mm media center edition still stalls/crashes with 'error transforming data.'(MS says will be resolved in final release of vista.) Anyhow, in mmjb assuming you can Search an Artist in Demand or Radio and get error when you click results, what I finally stumbled on was to right-click the result under Artists and choose 'Send Page by email' and copy the url from the message into ie and it would open up in mmjb. To me that indicates some problem w/ mmjb communicating w/ ie. The workaround won't help is you get the error before you get to the radio/on demand screens tho. kevink

Hi. I have Vista Ultimate and also SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio onboard. The same problem. The driver is up to date (Vista checked online), after restarting I can play the mp3s but after pausing Winamp or opening Windows Media Player or another application the sound turn off. I found a way to restore it without rebooting. Here is how: Control Pannel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, right click on Speakers and then Propreties, Advanced tab, choose a preset then click Test. After some moments it says that another application is using the sound....choose to terminate that application and the sound come back. Till when? Till the next time it wants to go out... I wonder if this audio bug can be fixed....

No problemo- off topic-but they did the same thing with Defender in XP- the beta was done Dec 31st, and it'll error out if you try and run it, have to uninstall, and get the final-lol not a peep from MSFT; at first; saw it on their website I think though-but in the meantime;had at least 15 calls from customers, saying Defender was broke in XP LOL

The Windows XP wallpaper changer (from Power Toys) will install (after an error message), and will work until you reboot, at which time it won't work. You can install it again, but it's too much of a hassle. The "Personalization" selections for wallpaper changing don't work with my photos, only showing the middle portion of the photo (no matter which of the three buttons at the bottom I select). This is frustrating for someone who wants to use his own photos for wallpaper.

Will Microsoft ever produce a 'desktop wallpaper changer' feature? I'm sick of having to go find a 3rd party app to do it, only to find mostly they are crap or have ads/spyware. I thought it would be a good feature to have/do, which is why I've made this suggestion. Thanks.

I just tried going into the control panel > sound, and when I got there it recognized I was having a problem and asks if I wanted to disable something, so I clicked yes. Now everything is working. I hope this helps some of you folks. It was really frustrating before.

This is all personal investigation and personal opinion. You can easily verify these findings yourself, and this data is provided in good faith.
It appears that Satellite TV for PC is installing a private copy of wmp.dll version 10.0.0.3802 to-- C:\Program Files\SatelliteTVforPC\2006\Elite\wmp.dll
Since Vista uses Windows Media Player version 11, you will then find that Windows Media Player will crash or simply not start when you attempt to run it. To undo this damage, you would at the least want to: * Go to the Start menu * Type "cmd.exe" in the search text bar there * Right-click on CMD in the results list and select Run As Administrator * Then in that command prompt type "regsvr32 wmp.dll" You should then be able to run the player again.
